I have used the DarkRoom theme, but I can't remember if the bug showed
up in the Human theme before I tried DarkRoom.
Also, the bug only affects the Human, Human Clearlooks, and DarkRoom
themes for me.

Thanks, that did the trick. Evidently the dapper version of lyx did
depend on this package, but the dependency was removed in edgy?

Binary package hint: lyx
In editing mode, all math symbols are substituted with red text
indicating tex commands. This occurs when opening existing LyX
documents, when a symbol is entered with a backslash command, or entered
via the math palette. I'm unable to find an option
