When using gdm I am unable to login to users with names of greater than
8 characters (via LDAP). If I switch to xdm or wdm then the
authentication works perfectly fine. I AM able to use gdm with users
that use 8 or less characters in their name. The messages I found in the
daemon.log are consistent
I also have a Y530 and ran into the exact same trouble with a clean
install of Karmic (I had been running LinuxMint 7 without issues). The
trouble appears to be at the kernel level. I rebuilt to a custom build
of 2.6.31.6 and the freezing issues haven't been happening.

I'm also seeing this issue in a fresh install (not an upgrade) of Jaunty
(xubuntu). The same laptop and wireless router didn't have this issue
with hardy.
Post 21 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/331103/comments/21 seems to be the most consistent with
what I'm seeing
it will pop-up.
If you're not running intrepid (kde4) then a similar dcop command will unhide
the yakuake window:
dcop yakuake DCOPInterface slotToggleState
