On my Thinkpad T61 the driver module e1000e causes this lockup. To test
if this is your case also, run the following in a terminal and then try

Public bug reported:
With the availability of adobe-flashplugin 64-bit in the partner
repository, this metapackage should recommend adobe-flashplugin OR
flashplugin-installer on amd64. This is the case with the i386 package.
Release: This applies to all releases that have adobe-flashplugin amd64
It seems to have been dropped from Debian stable and testing. It is,
however, still available in Debian unstable.
You could try to install the Oneiric .deb directly in Precise, it should
work.

When testing Natty in VirtualBox for the past few weeks It happened on
every login. I installed Natty on real hardware (Lenovo Thinkpad T61
with Intel Graphics) 4 days ago and this has happened to me twice, so it
is definitely not VM specific. A logout and login has fixed it both
times.

I can confirm that this still happens with nautilus 2.28.1-0ubuntu3. I
have to resort to Jan's fix to be able to use Gnome-Do, since it is very
annoying.

I had the same issue. It was apparently fixed by deleting .pulse in my
home directory, you should check if that does it.
