Just ran into this today after upgrading from 10.04 to 13.04.
What is the deal here? This is a major issue affecting web developers (and
others).
I don't see why network-manager should be overwriting changes I make in
/etc/hosts. (I could understand a block that it maintains within the file.)

I am experiencing this problem on 13.04/Raring 64-bit.
Building the package as suggested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xmlcopyeditor/+bug/901547/comments/12
makes no difference for me.

I had the same "jumpy" issue when upgrading to Jaunty.
Fixed it using a solution from further up in comments-- adding Option
"AccelMethod" "xaa" to my xorg.conf
I'm not sure what "xaa" does (I'll do some reading later today, 'cause
I'm curious now) but it significantly improved my us
