OK, I think I have resolved my problems with suspend on lid close and they had
nothing to do with K/Ubuntu.
First of all, the power button problem I described above was caused by some
acpid scripts in /etc/acpi, after I uninstalled it, pressing the power button
would put the laptop to sleep
Actually I marked it invalid, since there was not 'Resolved' option.
Invalid makes more sense since it really had nothing to do with the OS.
Thanks again.

I have tested as requested with
linux-image-3.12.0-999-generic_3.12.0-999.201309300405_amd64.deb.
Still no change with lid state as reported by cat
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state
Please let me know if there is anything else you'd like me to test.
Thanks

Thank you David Tomaschik
That package fixed the resolution problems I was having on my laptop.
Hopefully they will get this fixed before the final Gutsy release.
Thanks again.

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
After upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-ati=1:6.7.194-1ubuntu1, the highest
resolution I can get from xserver is 1280x800, but my
LCD monitor supports 1400x1050 natively.
