When installed on fresh Ubuntu 14.04 trying to start service fails with this:
# service dlm start
/etc/init.d/dlm: 22: .: Can't open /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions
I am not sure if it is related, but manually running dlm_controld doesn't work
as well:
# dlm_controld -D

I've upgraded from Lucid-Maverick-Natty
The reason for failed startup is that is line 41 within
/etc/init.d/pcscd
In short:

I've followed your advice.
I had no linux-alsa-driver-modules-$kernelversion.
I've removed anything related to kernel, installed it again and watched the
installation progress.
At one point I've noticed there is snd-hda-dkms package, which finally led me
to solution.
