I experienced the renaming crash in Thunar with a new installation of 
Xubuntu 15.10. I changed the group permissions (right click - properties 
- permissions) to 'read and write'. The fault seems to have disappeared 
for the moment. If it persists it's an easy fix.

No wait, it only works for folders not for single files!! However, pdf 
files in root of documents can now be be renamed without crashing.

I am convinced that this has something to do with permissions in general 
as applied from Thunar root - preferences - advanced - permissions
