Another comment that may help other GUI users test, you can enable the
fix through System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager. Then go to
Settings>Repositories and under the 'Updates' tab check the box under
Pre-released updates. Close out of that box and Synaptic, then do a
System>Administra
confirmed geekfreak. your original fix works as long as the mouse is
moved to a secondary display before running the script, even if the
mouse 'breaks' in the primary display. I was working off the primary
display when running the script and thus the original fix did not work.
To me it is easier
Robstarusa, that seems to do the trick for me as well. Moving anywhere
on secondary display then back to the primary display.
The quotes were also part of why it wouldn't work for me. If you try this make
sure there are quotes around the command similar to this:

Well Reuben's break is confirmed for my system. However geekfreak's fix
will not work for me.
The only fix found on two screens with different resolutions, is to
'alt+tab' to a window on screen 1. Attempt to move that window on
screen 1 with 'alt+F7'. This first attempt fails, so I alt+tab back
geekfreak. thank you for your efforts in documenting a fix. I have it
ready for the next time and it sounds much easier! I have not had as
many issues as long as I don't copy from one screen and paste to the
other. I try to limit the carrying any data across screens and it has
helped a lot as

Quick tip that I wanted to share to get out of the no-click mouse
problem. Got this idea from trying variations of Kevin Brown's
solution.
Keep holding down Alt+F7 while left clicking and moving the mouse
around.. Works for me every time so far. Makes the glitch more livable
for now.

I have 64bit and the same issue. Have been searching for quite a while
installing various packages trying to get ROES working (a java based photograph
ordering system). Roger, your tip there did the trick. The lib32nss-mdns was
the key to my woes.

I also have a brand new 64bit laptop that consistantly crashes with a 64
bit Intel Core Duo 2.4ghz. It has a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 (no
