I found a workaround for me!
I log out, then choose my login and down below I select "Classic (No
effects)" and now all windows seem to work with no blank screens.
5 or six firefox windows are ok.
and resizing the text editors is working.

I loaded synaptic and chose to remove nvidia 270 and install 173 and had
all kinds of problems.
When I rebooted, the loging screen was only one thin line of display at
the top of the monitor and all the rest was black.

It happened to me too now after upgrading.
Please post instruction how to down grade nvidia to 173.
I was fine with previous ubuntu kernel 2.6.35, now on 2.6.38 it is a
mess with the white screens.
