reject your workaround, as some time ago our corporate vpn server was moved
to Cisco solution, so I have no opportunity to make such test.

neither suspend, nor hibernate work: in case of suspend my laptop does
something similar to suspend preparation, but after it brings os back to
login screen. In case of hibernate laptop hangs with blank screen and
blinking cursor.

Hi,
I didn't succeed in resolving this issue on 8.04 release, but after I
migrated to 8.10 and kernel 2.6.27-7 it suddenly began to work... No
idea what was the problem, but now it works fine.
