I am having the exact same issue. I am also using a IBM Thinkpad X31. Tried changing the colour with "GNOME Color Chooser" but nothing seemed to apply to that font colour.
Is there anyway we can at least change the color from inside the Config Editor at least? The only solution I have been able to come up with is setting the desktop background to something light. Such a shame because it looks so great with the white text.
