1- disable compiz before starting to work with a OpenOffice document
which contains footnotes with the command in the terminal:
metacity --replace

I'm affected too with my amd-64 Ubuntu 10.04 everything was working
properly, then I upgraded to 10.10 and now, when added songs to my ipod
nano 5th generation it can see them but can't play the songs no sound
from the ipod and time of the song sticks to 00.00...

I tried to run compiz from the terminal to get the error message when it
crashes.
and it simply says "compiz - text length exceeded".
As workaround you can restart the gdm or restart compiz. The latter works
