For completeness:
I got the problem by update from 8.10 to 9.04. The screen became black for less
than a second, randomly. No relation to graphics or cpu load identifiable.
System: Intel 32bit
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz stepping 01
Card: ATI Sapphire X1550, 256MB
Monitor: NEC Mu
