I cannot say whether or not this is still an issue. I just disabled the
proprietary driver for my software modem as I rarely used it and the
sound worked after a reboot.
I am currently running another distro on the laptop so I'll toss in a
9.10 live CD (will probably try the 10.04 beta too) and

Re-ran it as apport-collect 441944 (no -p alsa-base) and it uploaded

This problem has been temporarily resolved by disabling the proprietary
Smart Link Software Modem driver available in Ubuntu's Hardware Drivers
dialog (jockey-gtk).
This is actually a compatibility issue between alsa and the modem
driver.
