If this does not work for someone, try this along with Ledif's solution:
Add these lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:
#the driver for the wirelss adapter
blacklist rt2800usb
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
then execute the following commands:
sudo rmmod rt2800usb rt2x00usb rt2x00l
I had ipv6 turned off in both ubuntu and firefox and the problem still
occurs

I also see this Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 in Ubuntu 8.04. For me CPU is not
hitting 100% yet but its slowly increasing over a period of time.
Currently, after 45 mins of usage its about 20%.
