hpodder has difficulties with ISO-8859-1
The Australian Broadcasting Commission Radio National podcasts also use
ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) encoding, so hpodder is unable to handle their

My mistake. Instead of editing the /usr/games/etoys script to remove -xshm , I
ran the squeak command line directly - which left SQUEAK_USERDIR unset. Having
the command line echoed on stdout makes that seem a plausible approach.

I've been having similar hangs on dapper now feisty. It seems to
happen more when I'm moving the mouse, I don't remember it happening
when using the keyboard.
