It is automatically mounted with sync:
/dev/sdb1 on /media/wd1200 type ext3 (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,data=ordered)
Let's try to change that:
mount -t ext3 -o rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,data=ordered,async /dev/sdb1
/mnt/test
Much better!

noticed it was painfully slow compared to edgy. Writes to an external

The 'SUSPEND_MODULES="ehci_hcd"' works well for me unless I'm running a
virtual machine. So as part of my suspend I need to suspend all of them
as well first.

I'm going to close this. After doing an edgy upgrade, rather than fresh
install, using the any-108 patch, making sure I don't enable post-only
networking, and removing msdfs proxy from the Samba share
configurations, I am able to map my network drives.

I can confirm this on Kubuntu Edgy with amaya (9.51-2.1). This really
stinks, as none of the debs on the W3C site will work with Edgy either,
so now I'm without my HTML editor.
