I've since further isolated the problems to "desktop effects" because it also creates issues for Chromium BSU, TuxRacer, and FreeCol. In Chromium, it causes massive flicker. In TuxRacer, it causes missing graphics and black screens. In FreeCol, it causes funny mouse & I/O errors. I'm guessing a
