I basically did the same as John ^ - but I used Ramlog
(http://www.tremende.com/ramlog/index.htm) - it basically mounts your
/var/log as ramdisk and synchronizes the contents when you shut down /
start your computer with /var/log.hdd. Playing around with "iotop -oPa"

This problem took me hours to troubleshoot.
I also thought that the .kde folder was the one which prevented me from logging
in. Renamed it. But without success.
This one eventually helped me - deleting the kde-cache for my user in /var/tmp
as suggested here:

I created a test user and was able to login to KDE again. Seems that our
user profile somehow got messed up.

point. "Upgrading php5-cli" and then it just sat there doing
nothing.. Cannot reproduce it as I tried it a second time and then it

Followed your instructions - however I am unsure if this really helps
you.
As a normal user (on the command line) it said that I am not part of the admin
group.
As root user it just segfaulted leaving me puzzled as what is wrong with my
system :-(
