I have no /etc/rc.conf. There is one in /etc/init but it does not end
with a return 0.
Regarding a plain vanilla /swap: the suggested approach I like BUT would
not some script somewhere attempt to create the encrypted swap and still
cause an error message? How to avoid that?

Well, apparently we can't delete thunar without killing the xbuntu
desktop! (Based on what I see would be deleted - multiple packages - if
I remove thunar.
