I think the bug is still present in latest release. For after my upgarde from
10.10 (in which Compiz worked fine) I had to major issues:
1. X did not start. It crashed and I ended up in console 1. Manually setting
the general vesa driver in /etc/Xorg worked was a temp solution. Final solution

I hope the bug will be fixed soon. Else if Ubuntu 11.10 will no longer

I can confirm this behavior; it's been the case for several weeks at
least on natty and is still occurring as of 2011-03-11.
The gconf key seems to be getting set properly. On my system (allegedly
configured to use Chromium as the default browser):

Aha! The setting is correctly controlled by gnome-default-applications-
properties. Running this (or launching 'Preferred Applications' from a
menu/Unity) contains a Web Browser setting that was set to Firefox.

can also be seen by dragging the guest VM window when it is changing

This was indeed due to lack of unity support in vbox... I saw that unity
was still an option in the installer and thought that meant edubuntu
would default to the old panel-based desktop. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm experiencing the same cifs performance issue after upgrading our
server from 7.10 i386 server to 10.04 x64 server and connecting to a
ReadyNAS device.

Ameet,
This system was installed via PXE, but this bug doesn't come into play
until attempting to boot from the local disk after install. So PXE
should not be a factor here.
Per cjwatson's request, I tried changing grub options (removing the
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT options from /etc/default/grub
