I use xchat as an IRC client, and on old gnome (not unity) when I
started xchat there was an xchat icon (a yellow x) in the
'dock'/'taskbar'/'where the clock & other notifications go'. Clicking on
that would hide xchat, clicking on it again would show xchat.
