i got to my dislpay settings and i selected 800x600 60HZ and i got the
screen fitting my monitor exactly but the icons look bigger and i
require 1024x768 screen resolution

my monitor is LG 552V.
I tried in the said IRC client and in ubuntuforums long time back
They tried helping me but then it just solved only upto a certain
extent.
Then they suggested me to do a fresh install of 9.04 and report it as
bug here.

soon after deleting the file according to your second method..i saved
the copy of the xorg.0.log onto the desktop and here's the
attachement...
