I also have the same symptoms
No sound, no ability to shutdown (it just logs me off) and no drive
mounting permissions
Asus M4A78LT-M-LE AMD760 chipset
AMD Athlon II X4 635
GT240 Nvidia card with driver 256.X from nvidia
running 10.4 LTS clean install

System boots with no sound and cannot
I had this issue today on a brand new install of 10.04.1 LTS
Boot up - could not mount my hard drives.
Saw other issues too like could not change my account type in Users and Groups.
No prompt for sudo password, just no response at all.
Could access sudo prompt for update manager though.

should have been.
I resolved this with a simple hack:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.16
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.10
I personally had to do the following today
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.16
