I also cannot lock packages in Synaptic. I have a fresh install of Edgy.
I tried various scenarious - package installed/not installed, official
repo., universe etc. same result.
(synaptic:9666): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_model_get_iter: assertion
`GTK_IS_TREE_MODEL (tree_model)' failed
Just updated to 2.6.17-10.30 and everything seems to be working fine.

the following:

Found this on the Ubuntu Forums:
Had the same problem and permanently got rid of it
by adding the following $HOME/.Xsession file:

That solved the problem, but don't ask me why...

Note: Changing "Name and Description" to "Name" and the Find pop-pop
window and searching for a package seems to speed up Synaptic
considerably.

strace -f gnome-settings-daemon
to your gnome sessions - startup programs is a workaround ATM.
