I had similar problem when I used the Leadtek nVidia GT220 graphic card on my desktop with the nVidia proprietary driver available from the Ubuntu repository. The problem disappeared after I: - physically removed the Leadtek nVidia GT220 from my desktop - uninstalled the nVidia proprietary driver
