I had to modify the script to get it to work under Solaris:

The error could be in a number of places: fsck, blkid,
fsck.{jfs,reiserfs}, some place else.
Some things to try with example code:
- look at /etc/rcS.d/S30checkfs.sh
But the reason the bug happens is because that people try to install
ubuntu on an external drive, and then it steals the mbr from windows and
never gives it back,
That hypothesis is not consistent with several of the posts, especially
when Windows is not involved. FWIW, I've installed Ubuntu
I have a similar problem on a Dell Latitude D610 running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
(Dapper Drake). Running 'alsamixer' and adjusting the volume for
Headphone worked.
Attached is the output from this script:

I tried this in Dapper which worked for adjusting the headset volume:
Right click on the Volume Applet
Click on Open Volume Control
Adjust the Headset volume
