Nvidia 340.108 fails to install with kernels 5.5
I followed your steps but just encountered the same errors I previously had. I
have both the kernel 5.4 and 5.8 installed, but nvidia-340 can't be installed
with the 5.8, and I am unable to login with the 5.8. I read elsewhere that
nvidia is no longer providing support for its legacy
drivers.
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10 without realizing this problem with the
nvidia-340.108 . The upgrade failed to install this driver with the 5.8
kernel that comes with the upgrade. Fortunately, I still have the 5.4
kernel that is compatible. I have a Dell Inspiron 1400 with legacy GPU
GeForce

The extensions do load when I enable them.?? The problem is that after a
reboot
they are not enabled and I need to do it by hand. This does not happen

every reboot but occurs often enough when I start up the computer that
it's annoying.

I seem to have fixed the login bug by commenting out the line: sleep 5
under the line: post-start script
in the /etc/init/lightdm.conf
file. The login now works correctly most of the time with an occasional
failure (5% of the time).
I also fixed problems with the software-center, Ubuntu

after the line: post-start script
in /etc/init/lightdm.conf
my lightdm bug is fixed in Ubuntu 13.04

It would help if each game in Spider had an assigned number, then at
least I could re-start the game I was playing before it crashed - I like
to play the same game over and over to improve my score (sad I know but
that's the way it is)

Open a document and run the manual spell check. On the screen that says
there is a spelling issue I took a screen dump and tried to open another
document to save it in. OpenOffice crashes. I have now repeated this on
several occasions.
