Ideally, gxine wouldn't build-dep on firefox-dev.

This is either a xine-lib problem or an ALSA configuration problem (I'm
assigning to xine-lib for now); gxine knows nothing of audio drivers
except, if you use -A, for which one to tell xine-lib to use. The
question is why the ALSA output driver failed...
As a workaround, you could try "gxine -A o
The backtrace (such as it is) clearly marks this as a xine-lib bug.
(Many of the others look like xine-lib bugs too.)
Also, if you can find an online stream which shows the same behaviour OR
you can make available the file which you tried to play OR you have a
URL for it, that would be useful...
Closing, though I think that maybe a bug report on another package is
still warranted if the graphics hardware detection hit a problem with
that card.

This isn't a gxine bug. It's an X bug; the graphics card driver or a
related library is at fault here. You should reassign this bug
accordingly.
As a workaround, you can use "gxine -V xshm" or "gxine -V opengl";
you'll also need to set the default video output method to whichever
works better.
**
This isn't a front-end bug. It looks like an upstream ffmpeg problem,
and therefore it affects xine-lib due to its internal copy of ffmpeg.
1.1.4 is affected; I've not tested 1.1.2.

And "_nv89gl"? Would that, by any chance, be from an nVidia OpenGL
library...? That's (a) not a gxine problem, (b) not a xine-lib problem
and (c) dependent on an nVidia-tainted kernel.
(BTW, try using the Xv or XxMC video driver instead.)
