Note: the kernel that shows the problem is the one installed by the

I have experience a similar problem, intermittently. Running pidgin via
strace, it stalls trying to open an orbit socket.
If one removes the linc- file out of /tmp/ that it was trying to
open, it works again.

I am sorry to report that this problem has gone away for me, but I'm not
sure what I did to fix it.
I did two things which might have made a difference:
- changed my router's configuration to use WPA and TKIP rather than WPA2 and AES
- took the interface out of "roaming mode" using nmapplet's "man

NetworkManager only shows "wired network"; there is no "wireless
network" option.
I can manually associate with iwconfig, but the interface wlan0 still
doesn't appear in NetworkManager.

I have very similar symptoms. My laptop is a Toshiba Tecra A6, also with
an Alps touchpad, and after a dapper -> edgy upgrade scrolling stopped
working. Scrolling starts working after switching consoles, logging in a
new gdm session, or after a suspend.
