In my tty's, having a TERM=linux is the default and doesn't cause
problems with vim. Perhaps you have another bug?
xfce4-terminal is what sets the TERM, but it shouldn't be linux, since
then programs wouldn't know they can set the title.

TERM is unset in both gnome-terminal and guake.
It is correctly set to "xterm" when using konsole, and "linux" when
using the normal tty.
As a workaround, I've been setting TERM=rxvt in my .bashrc, however,
when switching to zsh there is

Had the same problem on a new (although updated) install of xubuntu gusty,
added the following to my xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection
And that fixed the problem (didn't even not
