I have the same problems as the previous two posters. Also it seems that
the old workaround of using this PPA https://launchpad.net/~george-
edison55/+archive/ubuntu/gnome-settings-daemon no longer seems to work.

This bug affects me (working with kwin) on Ubuntu 9.10, backports
enabled.
The symptoms are EXACTLY as described in comment #14 of bug #204927, so
I'm not retelling that story ;-)

Upon invocation from cron, backup-manager has some HAL_... environment
variables containing much data.

It might be interesting to know that the problem also occurs when using
gvncviewer (on jaunty). I started my vm using virt-manager and verified
(in /proc/../cmdline) that kvm is spawned with "-k de".
Eventually, both gvncviewer and virt-manager use libgtk-vnc, which might
be the place to look for.
