Nouveau behaves exactly as Po-Hsu Lin described. Sometimes it crashes

In fact, this happens whenever compiz crashes and needs to be rplaced.

Can't agree more. The difference in colour and lightness added by the
highlight is well within the range of variation among a typical set of
icons displayed. A mental effort, or otherwise unnecessary switching, is
required to detect the higlight. That reduces switching speed and is
uncomfortable.
Related, if not the same: a quick press-and-release of alt-backtick
(it's alt-$ on a Programmer Dvorak keyboard) works as intended, although
without a visual feedback. It switches to the next window in the stack.

And now it does it again. Something odd happened to gnome panel: it
reshuffled all applets in random order, all on its own accord. I fixed
that and locked it, but now it blocks the hot corners. If I disable the
panel's "expand" option and let it shrink to the center, everything
works as it should.
Not sure whether the pile of data attached to the original report has
anything useful in it, but moments after I sent it, my Xorg crashed on
an attempt to use gnome-volume-control:
