When nvidia-driver-435 is not installed, I can get to a console login
prompt from the login screen by pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 through 6. But when
nvidia-driver-435 is installed and I press any of those, I get to a
black screen with a blinking cursor.

Thank you for your suggestion, Kai-Heng. I did that in
`/etc/default/grub`. After editing I ran `sudo update-grub` without
trouble. I rebooted and made sure with `lsmod` that `nouveau` is not
loaded. And I still got a freeze.
Is there anything else we could investigate, please?

I don't feel that a non-close-up photo could help, but here is one. From
a normal viewing distance, when higher than 60hz, the image seems to
have decreased brightness. Only on close up one can tell that it does
not appear to be brightness, but a wrong pixel pattern.

returned `s2idle [deep]`.
And now the command you suggested seems to have changed it to `[s2idle]

Most modern video formats that I find on the interwebs, when I try to
play them with VLC, the sound is such a loud white noise, that I thought
maybe it is an assassination attempt on my life.
Totem refuses to play, claiming an error loading supporting library.

This is probably the same issue as bug #1613852, only that it happens in
Totem.
Totem, seems to work better, though. It fails to play at all. Which is
better than playing the video and playing very loud noise with it.

1. Installed `intel-microcode`
2. Rebooted
I did this to make sure that the problem still exists. And it did. Then
I:
3. `sudo systemctl disable thermald`
4. Rebooted
Frequency scaling seems fine. Hooray!

1. Install the intel-microcode package
2. `sudo systemctl disable thermald`
