Installing the kubuntu-desktop metapackage (also with --no-install-
recommends) and then switching the default display-manager back to gdm3
fixes this problem. I reverted to a backup to reproduce a problem setup
to aid in diagnosing the gnome issue because honestly, that's a pretty

With the latest kernel, I only experience this while the laptop's
plugged into AC. If I'm running on battery, the fan seems to behave like
it's supposed to.

I'm on feisty with a Samsung R55, and I've got a similar problem: The fan
doesn't stop.
/var/log/messages hos nothing about "fan" or "thermal", if that helps. If you
need anything else, just say the word.

I too got a Logitech Mouse (some wireless, don't know the exact model). I'm
quite sure the problem first occured after I had switched to that mouse
(before, I had a MS mouse).

Running both Dapper and up-to-date Edgy on a Toshiba M30 here. BOTH
produce this error, though Edgy seems to work better. I tried all the
tricks mentioned here except turning off ACPI, because I still need
that.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M30, and I can confirm this. Running
2.6.17-10-generic right now, and the display brightness won't change. Fnfx
gives this error:
"fatal error: Could open /proc/acpi/toshiba/keys." [I think it should say
"could _not_ open" ;)]
