I am not sure if this is the right spot or not but I appear to be having
a similar problem. There is one key difference, or perhaps the users
above haven't tried this yet. When GDM (login-screen) is supposed to
show up my monitor displays its "no signal or connect source" message.
This is to say my monitor is not receiving any info from the computer.

Interestingly enough if I attempt a "blind" login by typing [my login >>
tab >> password >> enter] the system will boot. When the splash screen
shows up (tan with bar and icons of nautilus etc) the monitor suddenly
"starts" receiving signal again and everything is roses.

It is also important to note that my problem did not start this way.
First it started as the GDM screen showing up but being the wrong
resolution. I use 1440x900 (16:10 format) but when the GDM login screen
was up it would use what looked like 1440x900 in a 4:3 format. Another
words the images where distorted and there was black bars on the left
and right sides of the screen. This drove me crazy but not nearly crazy
as logging in blind. Then after one of the numerous updates it just
stopped being there at all.

Any help would be much appreciated and I believe I can get any files you
need.

Cheers
