creating /etc/hal/fdi/policy worked for me (ubuntu 11.10 x64), quick

More Info
1-When I tried:
System --administration--System Testing
Screen got Black
2-I tried to go to a terminal (with black screen) ctrl-alt F1
then screen begin flashing (black with 5 grey vertical lines)
3- ctrl -alt- f7
screen return to normal and now I can see the System testing program
