You are not alone. :) This started when I upgraded from dapper to edgy the other day. This is likely to be due to xft rendering, because it only seems to happen with applications that use truetype fonts (i.e., all my fvwm menus are empty with "xft:...", but are perfectly fine with "-adobe- helvet
