I wasn't able to get nvidia-settings to work - but I did get my second
monitor to show up - i'm using 173.14.30-0ubuntu8 driver with my
GeForce FX 5200 card.

I was able to work around this issue by starting gmediaserver in daemon mode
before running the de-install.
To do this you will need to edit the default config file:
/etc/default/gmediaserver
change this line from 'no' to 'yes'
GMEDIASERVERRUN=no
cd /etc/init.d/
./gmediaserver start
then sta
