My preferred sound output is HDMI which works fine.
Occasionally I use some bluetooth headphones which work fine too.
Once the headphones are switched off though, ubuntu reverts to speaker output -
instead of the expected HDMI output, hence I have to manually select HDMI
Same here.
I wanted to check the total size of few large folders (maybe around
10 files, 300GB in total) and the counters have been going up and
down for about 30mins now...

I have the same problem (occupying about 700MB of ram in my case) with
fully updated amd64 ubuntu 12.10 (upgraded 12.04 on release) .
zeitgeist-daemon --replace drops memory usage to approx 700kB
