UBUNTU will not run successfully on my Netbook hardware (EEE PC 4G
laptop) as it was not written for this hardware. I have subsequently
switched to Windows X

No in fact the updates that came along after I'd logged this problem,
plus the fact that I re-installed ubuntu, seemed to fix for a while.
Then Firefox and Flash pluggin played up after that. So sadly decided
I'd had enough re-installing etc that for time being I have given up on

I have Gnash as flash player, I wasn't sure what "Non-Free" meant, but
couldn't find out.
I'll try your suggestion regards disabling plugins.
I tried Seamonkey and same thing was happening so highly likely that

I'm sorry I don't understand the question I downloaded Open office
through Add/Remove packages in Ubuntu. Whilst I have done long way
around installs in the past, but that was a long time ago and I'm not
sure I'd know how to do it now.
