As Chris Coulson wrote, the problem can be solved by using System ->
Administration -> Authorizations. Of course, for those of us that don't
have access to that one either (due to the same problem, I assume), the
sollution is to start it with

gksudo polkit-gnome-authorization

This lets you give explicit authorizations for specific users for
specific tasks.

For example, freedesktop/systemtoolsbackends/"Manage system
configurations"

Click the 'Grant' button and take it from there. This solved my NX
problems. At least so far.
