It happens with any Linux distro based off of Ubuntu, Mint included :(
I've reproduced it on tons of machines, but they won't increase the severity of
this bug or make any indication of working on fixing it

This is extremely __CRUCIAL__ to me
Gnibbles is one of the main reasons I use Linux on my netbook over
Windows. If this isn't resolved soon I'm going to need to change
distributions (seriously). It's really irritating that I can't play my
favorite game, which it has been for the last 4 years, ever
