finally, i found some time, and tried suspending with the most recent
mainline kernel for trusty (which at this time is
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.15-rc2-trusty/ ) and it
behaves the same (except that it is not compatible with nvidia drivers
from xorg edgers so i can't test if
ubuntu 10.10 is able to suspend/resume the same machine when using nvidia
drivers (but it fails when using vesa).
ubuntu 14.04 fails in both cases.

new discovery:
it seems that the instability is triggered by my IDE DVD drive (LITE-ON DVDRW
SOHW-1653S)
SATA, IDE and USB are all controlled by the same chip (nvidia MCP51) so it
kinda explains such broad effect.
the machine worked perfectly during 3 weeks when the drive was removed.

netstat -tp reveals lots of the old connections made by gvfsd-http, and
some of them are several days old. this seams like a resource leak. not
very harmful for typical user, but the intense use of gvfsd could even
block the user from making
this happens occasionally with my compiz + nvidia.
it might be triggered by opening/unminimizing windows while the other windows
are "moved out" to show the desktop (but i haven't found a reliable way to
reproduce this bug).
last time it happened, several of my windows became unreachable. after a
annoying in almost every gtk app, especially when working with keyboard
and the mouse lands in some random location, invoking absurd tooltips
that hang indefinitely and obscure the exact part of the screen you
would like to see.
IIRC, windows 95 had the tooltip timeout configurable in the registry
clearly an usability bug.
the gnome terminal should not create a new selection until the mouse cursor is
dragged by at least one character.
accidental mouse movements are nearly unavoidable with todays high resolution
screens.
combined with the stupid unix selection model (losing the "clipboard"
in my case the mysql server failed to start because of the outdated
config file, removing "skip-bdb" from /etc/mysql/my.cnf solved the
problem (this is because they removed berkeley db support in mysql)
