Just a quick update on this. The issue came back when Ubuntu updated my compiz packages to the latest 1:0.9.11.1+14.04.20140701-0ubuntu1 versions. I updated to NVIDIA 340.24, and that didn't help. I had to actually stop lightdm from a tty and manually remove the entire ubuntu-desktop and associa
