(3.13.0-34-generic). On host system diskstats are ok, but on virtual
machine (KVM) the diskstats are showing crazy values.

Hm, the bug still persists. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.2 but can't ssh into
dropbear because of this bug.
Removing the after configure_networking ends in a non booting
system. Adding sleep 10 does not really change anything either. The
system stops for 10 seconds, and then again tries to initializie
