I can confirm this bug. I have the same problem on my machine using

Same problem here. I can type in a few characters of the password and
then the box gets filled with asterisks. I have to switch to tty1 then
in order to restart kdm. I have this problem since an update from dapper
to edgy. kdm: 4:3.5.4-0ubuntu29
