I have since updated to Ubuntu 10.10 and I am no longer experiencing any
problems with update. I have also replaced one of my hard drives as I
noticed some irregularities that suggested that the disk was about to
die. If no one else is experiencing this I would suggest that my faulty
hard drive

Update: Found the following https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source

issues, but not all.
