I have acer aspire 5734z with gma 4500 running archlinux. best solution
for me is adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_osi=Linux to
/etc/default/grub then update grub. still starts dark but brightness
keys work. it is kernel issue not the operating system. See here
This is still an issue on the current daily image (2011-12-30). My

I found a temporary fix that works very well. It is not perfect, but it
is far better, and far more convenient, than the setpci fix. With this

On a related note, I attempted to run Oneiric with an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file
in place that referenced the i915 driver. I was greeted by the Try or Install
prompt with the backlight activated, but no wallpaper. When I attempted to Try

every event no matter where your mouse pointer is.

Actually, after adding this, it works, but only AFTER I turn the
backlight on, using the command I mentioned earlier. So, I can change
the brightness, but, when it's off, I still can't turn it back on
without running that command (which I have a shortcut for, by the way.

remove the STA restricted driver and then install the fwcutter method
described elsewhere here (just google BCM4311 fwcutter install.
Then do a:

I'm using gscan2pdf 0.9.31 on Ubuntu 10.10 with HP Officejet 6500.
Selecting batch-scan fixes the problem, but I had to come here to learn

When using unity-window-decorator windows still has this border around
them that prevents the snap and grid plugins from lining windows up on
the edge of the screen. This is with compiz 1:0.9.4-0ubuntu3 (as this is
actually a bug in unity-window-decorator which is a part of compiz I've

The minimal virtual install is working because it does not install the
'irqbalance' package. This problem happens on both 10.04 and 10.10.
Install it however you want (normal install, or regular minimal; which
looks just like normal to me but minimal virtual doesnt have LIC
support), then

Nope, new kernel didn't help; it actually made things worse. I've
attached my dmesg showing the BUG message. When booting I end up seeing
the text output from the boot process with a mouse cursor on top of it.
If it switch to another VT then back to VT 7 everything paints
correctly.
