I'm having pretty much identical problem with a Dell Inspiron N5110
using Ubuntu 11.10. For now if I could just disable the touchpad I'd be
happy. Please let me know if there is any other information I can
provide.

I found the problem: Base was not installed! Once I installed it it
worked, but there should be something in the code to prevent this crash,
and also a message to the user that they will need to install base in
order to use the feature. There is no indication that Base is required
to use this
Is it really a bug? I've had this problem before, though it was a
Debian installation that borked things up with win xp. The problem, I
believe relates to the way some filesystems save things all over the
partition, rather than always at the front. I've managed to avoid this
problem since by

utilities should read defragment utilities etc...
